About the Borelli Awards
When Raymond Borelli first attended the University of Illinois, he pledged The Delta Chi Fraternity in 1953. He firmly believed that membership in the fraternity had a significant and positive impact on his life and he remembers it as a great and moving experience. The fraternity provided academic support for a struggling student, opportunities to develop leadership and social skills as well as avenues to serve the community. While at the University of Illinois, Borelli enrolled in ROTC, entered the U.S. Army and ultimately retired as Colonel, United States Army. In addition, he formed lifelong friendships. To this day, five decades later, his best friends are those who were members of the Illinois chapter when he was there. As a matter of fact, two of them were his pledge brothers.
Given his firm belief that students benefit from enrolling in higher education and being members of social, Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities, Mr. Borelli and his family have established a number of awards at various institutions. These consist of the College of Charleston Foundation, the University of Illinois Foundation, Monticello, Illinois High School and Bement, Illinois High School.
The goals and mission of The Borelli Awards are to encourage students to excel academically, to become outstanding members of social, Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities, to participate in philanthropic and service projects and to be good citizens of their respective communities.
Borelli Award Information
The Annual Borelli Awards for the Greek Community at the College of Charleston are presented as part of the larger SAIL Awards program and have been revamped to encourage organizations to work towards certain goals in five specified areas in order to measure chapter success and receive recognition. Awards will be given based on basic statistical information collected each semester on the Greek Report, as well as information reported in the Greek Community Standards and elaborated upon during a presentation to a panel of judges. Chapters will receive a score based on both their Greek Community Standards and presentation which will be added together for a total score. All chapters who achieve a certain total score range will be awarded a Chapter of Excellence or Chapter of Achievement Award. The Excellence and Achievement awards will take the place of the Chapter of the Year award and as many chapters who attain the needed score will be recognized in one of the two categories. Points and feedback in each area will be provided to the chapter presidents to use as a basis for goal setting for the upcoming year.

The five focus areas and awards for each are:
Scholarship and Academics
- Highest GPA: Awarded to the organization in each council with the highest combined GPA’s for spring and fall semester. (Greek Report)
- Most Improved GPA: Awarded to the organization in each council with the greatest improvement in their combined chapter GPA from the prior year. (Greek Report)
- Excellence in Academic Programming: Awarded to the organization in each council based on their scores from their Greek Community Standards and Presentation based on scholarship incentives and academic programming within their chapter.
Philanthropy and Service
- Philanthropy Donation Award: Awarded to the organization in each council that made the largest monetary donation per member. (Greek Report)
- Service Award: Awarded to the organization in each council with the most combined service hours per member. (Greek Report)
- Excellence in Philanthropy: Awarded to the organization in each council based on their scores from their Greek Community Standards and Presentation based on philanthropy events and community service events planned by your organization and that you supported sponsored by other organizations and community agencies.
Membership and Leadership Development
- Excellence in Membership and Leadership Development: Awarded to the organization in each council based on their scores from their Greek Community Standards and Presentation based on new member education programming, membership education programs, alumni/advisor engagement, and leadership development within the chapter.
Campus and Community Involvement
- Campus Involvement Award: Awarded to the organization in each council with the highest percentage of members involved in other campus organizations. (Greek Report)
- Excellence in Campus and Community Involvement: Awarded to the organization in each council based on their scores from their Greek Community Standards and Presentation based on involvement and support of organizations and activities that are not service related, including support of athletic events, campus events and programs sponsored by other organizations and departments, and participation in events around the Charleston community.
Citizenship and Social Development
- Excellence in Citizenship and Social Development: Awarded to the organization in each council based on their scores from their Greek Community Standards and Presentation based on a demonstrated understanding of risk management rules and policies, education and training provided to chapter members about these policies, and participation in socially responsible training events and/or campus organizations.
Individual Awards
The following individual awards will also be given during the Borelli Awards ceremony. All of them will be nomination based and scored anonymously by the judges; anyone in the Fraternity and Sorority Community can nominate an individual for the following awards. Clicking on the name of each award will take you to the nomination form for that award. Nominations received before January 31, 2019 will be considered for awards.
Scholar of the Year: Designed to recognize one male and one female who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement within the fraterntiy and sorority community.
New Member of the Year: Designed to recognize one new member from each council who has demonstrated outstanding achievement within the fraternity ans sorority community during their first year of membership.
President of the Year: Designed to recognize one president from each council who has demonstrated outstanding achievement within their organization and fraternity and sorority community during their term as president.
Fraternity Man of the Year: Designed to recognize one fraternity man who has demonstrated outstanding involvement and achievement within the fraternity and sorority community as well as on campus while upholding the values of his Greek organization.
Sorority Woman of the Year: Designed to recognize one sorority woman who has demonstrated outstanding involvement and achievement within the fraterntiy and sorority community as well as on campus while upholding the values of her Greek organization.
Advisor of the Year: Designed to recognize an individual who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to his or her organization and the fraterntiy and sorority community.
Courage Award: This award is created and sponsored by the Order of Omega National Leadership Honorary Society. It is designed to recognize a member or organization in the fraterntiy and sorority community that made a decision or action that would be considered courageous and out of the ordinary. This act may have benefited another member, organization, the College of Charleston, the Charleston community, or any combination.
